The Garden of My Heart
May
is certainly the month of garden preparation. My husband, bless his
country heart, has been preparing his garden since February! His
love for the outdoors and working in the soil makes him very anxious
for spring to arrive. There is a saying that goes something like
this,
“You are nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on
earth.” I know this is true for my husband.
I
think about weeding and what a chore it can be. We love to plant
and we love to reap, but in-between comes the weeds! This is also
true in the care of our soul.
The
weeds that grow in our soul sometimes are thistles of self-interest,
which grow so naturally within us and can consume us rather quickly!
In order to please God, our souls require constant weeding and
watering. This can be done through prayer, confession and obedience
to the Lord. We cannot allow our hearts to become choked by thorns
of greed or even trivial pursuits.
Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of
it springs the issues of life.” Our hearts like our gardens require
constant care.
As
we enjoy the beauty of May, I am wondering…How does your garden
grow?
